Macarena Costan is an artist and photographer based in Bristol, England. Her work explores themes of identity, femininity, gender stereotypes, and overlooked cultural or political narratives—often blending documentary and conceptual approaches. She is interested in expanding the visual vocabulary of photography and experimenting with the creative and collaborative potential of the medium. She holds a First-Class BA (Hons) in Photographic Art from the University of South Wales (2016) and an MA in Photography with Distinction from the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol, 2019).
In 2025, her project Fe+minus was selected for outdoor projection at Festival OFF Arles as part of the Cómo ser fotógrafa programme during Les Rencontres d’Arles, France. In 2024, she was a finalist in Fotolibro <40 (Comunidad de Madrid) and participated in the Angkor Photo Festival in Cambodia. Earlier achievements include winning the Flash Forward Award (Magenta Foundation, 2019) and receiving a commended entry for the Genesis Imaging Postgraduate Award (2019). Her work has been exhibited internationally at venues including the Martin Parr Foundation, Ffotogallery (Wales), CBS Gallery (Liverpool), and the Pingyao International Photography Festival (China). Her solo exhibition Fe+minus was presented in 2023 at Silver & Steel Studios in Bristol. Macarena’s work has been featured in PHmuseum, Der Greif, Fast Forward: Women in Photography, Fisheye, C-41, Aint–Bad, and Booooooom, among others. She has also taken part in editorial features and artist takeovers with platforms such as the Magenta Foundation and Fast Forward.
Alongside her artistic practice, she regularly works as a unit stills and behind-the-scenes photographer and has assisted on editorial and commercial productions. Recent collaborators include Lua Ribeira (Magnum Photos), NERVIO Films, and TOAST, with additional work across music, fashion, and creative industries.
